Closure of MENUB

The United Nations Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi (MENUB) was established to monitor and report on the 2015 elections. Its mandate ended on 18 November 2015, with operations concluding on 31 December 2015.

MENUB Mandate

The United Nations Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi (MENUB) officially started its operations in the country on 1 January 2015, as stated in Security Council resolution 2137 (2014).

Adopted on March 13, 2014, Resolution 2137 (2014)established the United Nations Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi (MENUB) to monitor and report on the 2015 elections, following the conclusion of the United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB)’s mandate. The Mission was set up at the request of the Government of Burundi and will report on the electoral process in the country which will organize five polls in a four-month period between May and September. The elections start with the legislatives and communes on 26 May 2015. The first round of the presidential is scheduled for 23 June and, if necessary, a run-off on 27 July. On 17 July, Burundian voters elect senator and the cycle ends on 24 August with the holding of local elections (hills and districts councils).

The United Nations Electoral Observation Mission in Burundi (MENUB) concluded its mandate on November 18, 2015, and its operations drew to a close on December 31, 2015. This conclusion was in line with the mission's original mandate established by Security Council Resolution 2137 (2014), which did not require an additional resolution to terminate its operations.
