At a UN Security Council briefing on Burundi on 30 October 2019, the Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Burundi, Michel Kafando observed that the situation in the country remains tense. He also noted the absence of progress in the Inter-Burundi Dialogue, an initiative of the East African Community supported by the United Nations. Mr Kafando maintained that this was due in part on the lack of political will by the parties, compounded by the absence of firm commitment from States in the region. He also informed the members of the Security Council that was stepping down as Special Envoy.
